Year 7-10 New Student Technology Information
Technology is an important part of the learning experience at St Andrew's. From Kindergarten to Year 12, teachers are continuously finding new ways to integrate the latest and most age-appropriate technologies into their classrooms in a way that enhances the curriculum.
In 2013 iPads were introduced at St Andrew’s Cathedral School for students in Year 7 to Year 10 to build on our existing digital resources. Students having a personal device has allowed teachers to more easily work with students to help them grow in their ability to effectively use the latest digital platforms, research, collaborate and communicate online.
Students who are new to St Andrew’s Cathedral School and going into Year 7 to Year 10 in 2014 will need to come to class with an iPad. This will allow them to access their eTextbooks and SACSnet, the School’s Learning Management System.
The minimum specification recommended is an iPad 2 32GB Wi-Fi. This will allow students to use the latest operating system, iOS 7, have plenty of space for their school work, while also having a camera that can be used with apps such as iMovie. This minimum specification will be reviewed each year. However, we hope that families purchasing an iPad Air 32GB Wi-Fi will be able to use the device for the next three years.
All students are provided with filtered Wi-Fi access for their devices while at school. Responsibility for the device rests with the student and the family. The iPad, when full charged, has a battery that lasts up to 10 hours. Students are responsible for ensuring that their device is fully charged for each day and should not expect to be able to charge the device during the school day. iPads are to be locked away in a student’s locker when not being used for learning. Technology is not viewed as a replacement for writing and consequently all students are expected to bring paper and pens to lessons.
In addition to students’ own personal devices, desktop computers are available for Middle School students to use in the School Library (Ground Floor of St Andrew’s House) and Senior School students to use in in Study Hall (Level 3 of the Senior College). Students have the ability to print from these desktop computers if necessary. Desktop computers with specialised software are also available within Visual Arts, Design and Technology and Music classrooms.
